Stage 5 

Upon successful completion of Stage 4,  your child will be moved up to Stage 5 in the Swim England programme.

To pass this stage, your child will need to: 

  • Be able to swim 50m front crawl demonstrating good technique for the full distance. The child should demonstrate a streamlined body position and the arms should reach forward, catching the water to produce an effective arm pull and streamlined body position.

  • Child must be able to swim 50m backstroke demonstrating good technique for the full distance.

  • Demonstrate a streamlined body position throughout and the arms should rotate continuously, rolling the shoulders to produce an effective arm pull. The body should be flat in the water and legs should be straight when kicking with a slight bend at the knee only.

  • Be able to swim 50m breaststroke demonstrating good technique for the full distance.

  • Demonstrate the correct timing and their arms should pull back to the shoulders and into a streamline position on recovery.

  • Demonstrate a standing dive from the block or side, they should enter the water head first and remain streamlined.

  • Demonstrate a developed dolphin kick across 25m in a streamlined position. An undulating movement should be performed coming from the body.

  • Demonstrate treading water for a minimum of I minute using an eggbeater leg action and sculling hands.

  • Demonstrate a head first surface dive from a treading water position in the deep end, diving down towards the bottom of the pool.

  • Demonstrate a feet first surface dive from a treading water position in the deep end, diving towards the bottom of the pool.

  • Be able to listen to, and follow, instructions, paying attention to the teacher at all times throughout the lesson.
